Help support our latest project: the orphanage at the
shrine
Dr. Jordan Lancaster, founder of the TERRA SANCTA EDUCATION
TRUST, This small orphanage was set up by a local priest and is run with the help of a small number of young and enthusiastic religious in the local community. The religious community at Anjara is based around the IVE or Istituto di Verbo Incarnato (Institute of the Incarnate Word), with five sisters and three priests, from Argentina and Egypt, all between 24 and 38 years old. Its mission is the evangelisation of culture, with a special emphasis on the formation of young people to make them full, well-rounded individuals. The orphanage shelters nine girls, aged 6-16, some on a permanent and some on a temporary basis. They are all Christians, either with no families, or whose families are unable to look after them. The parish ministers to the local community of Bedouin Christians. It also maintains a school, catering for Years 1 to 9, with an enrichment program in art and music; and a recently opened library and cultural centre, where they hope to be able to organise concerts and host other music events. These activities all contribute to inter-faith dialogue: the parish school is attended by Christian and Muslim students; the library is the only place in town where Muslims and Christians have the opportunity to mix socially. We are supporting the orphanage and the work of the community at Anjara through all our fundraising activities and events, which include the “John Paul II Marathon of Peace”. The “John Paul II Marathon of Peace” takes place every year around Easter between Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Members of the TERRA SANCTA EDUCATION team participate in the Marathon of Peace to raise money for the orphanage and for Terra Sancta College in Bethlehem. Contact us for more information on how you can support our projects or if you would like to travel with us to the Holy Land on the 2008 Pilgrimage of Solidarity. |
